Japan

why why..

It has been sleepless nights for me.

In one of the city in northern Japan, amongst 17300 people, only 7500 people could evacuate and others were swallowed in the tsunami.

Day cares and kindergardens were swallowed too. Their mothers and fathers hearts must be so crushed...Especially small children and old people are victims.

There are people still under the smashed buildings - 72 hours is a key range to save people. It is very cold, snowing. The evacuated people are gathered but lacking food, medicines. There are not enough diapers and food for babies there, in the coldness.

Furthermore, there is a huge danger from nuclear plant.
Already many people from the power plant who has been in a way to evacuate got radiated and need treatment.
Poeple are so scared and worried, and they cannot feel they can trust the information from anywhere.

Japan has history of nuclear bomb attack twice, one in Hiroshima and one in Nagasaki. And now again, people and children got radiated.
What was it mean, those people who had died in tremendous suffer?

Nuclear plant has been provided necessarily energy for Japan.
But why have we not been aware of the risk of having nuclear plants on our country, a country of volcano and earthquake.

There were people who has been aware and opposing but as always in Japan, it was pushed away by authority and people who gets profit out of it. It is difficult in Japan to make a change. And many people were too ignorant, including myself.
Historically, politically, culturally...there are so many complicating reason for why we have ended up holding so many nuclear plant.
A man who has fighted to introduce Danish wind mill plant had to go through so many opposit from authority.
It is introduced in Japan, but not enough. Unlike advanced countries like Denmark, It has been difficult to get national consensus in Japan to push the alternative power source, which needed huge investment and more political support. I see many reasons behind and is so frustrated and sad about it.

Again government is providing information which is difficult to say whether it is true or not.
But truth is more important.

This is a time we must think what is very important.

  2. Dear Megumi,
This must be a really hard time for you. Are your family and friends in Japan allright?
I too have been wondering why Japan uses nuclear plants, when there is such a high risk of earthquakes. Seems like quite a risk to take, and now our worries have turned into reality in the most terrible way possible.

  3. Thank you so much for the warm comments..
My family and freinds are in Tokyo so they are doing ok, although everyone in Japan is very shocked and worried.
Right now, people are fighting to survive.
In a future I hope this would be a chance for Japanese people to know about nuclear plant and shift to ecological power plants such as wind mills from Denmark.

  4. Jeg følger også udviklingen i Japan meget tæt. Jeg har min bror, hans japanske kone og deres lille søn, som bor i Tokyo. De er også ok, men jeg bliver mere og mere bekymret over atomkatastrofen.
